An energy provider infrastructure in Italy was looking to renovate its building envelope to improve its energy efficiency thanks to the use of Ricehouse’s materials in 2021. The project which will take place in southern Italy in 2023 will cover a surface of 400 square meters. The pilot project has the scope to validate the intervention on one industrial/office building of the company in the view to implement the material on other buildings of the company.

Impact & Result

The system is expected to achieve a payback time of three years, generating annual savings of 2,700 EUR. This demonstrates its financial efficiency and highlights the long-term benefits of the investment.

Solution Spotlight

In the EU, buildings under construction are responsible for 40% of energy consumption, 36% of CO2 emissions and generate 1/3 of all waste. Moreover, most of the construction materials used are of petrochemical origin and have a linear life cycle. According to the “Sick building syndrome”, 40% of all materials used in the construction sector are hazardous. From an agricultural point of view, rice is the most consumed food globally with 66% of the world population basing their diet on rice. Every hectare of rice field produces 7 tons of edible product and 10 tons of residues, which must be dismantled. These by-products are burned on a global level, emitting a significant quantity of CO2. Rice Husk's solution tackles the challenging occurring in both the construction and agricultural sector. The company transforms rice residues into 100% natural construction materials that at the end of their service life return to nature. In particular, the company supplies 100% natural insulation material based on rice husk. By using an approach based on bio-architecture, the company enables the construction of energy-efficient, natural buildings, using low-cost rice residues.
