Description

A comprehensive feeding trial on rainbow trout (in terms of monitored and analyzed aspects) was conducted. The trial compared three diets: a control (the traditionally used commercial feed) and two Ocean Twist diets, which had similar protein, lipid, and energy content. The two Ocean Twist diets performed almost identically in terms of growth aspects, and for this reason, a single value as an average of the two diets is reported in the table (document attached). Overall, the Ocean Twist diets led to a 15% improvement in both the conversion factor and biomass increase. The trial involved bringing the fish to commercial size, and data on evisceration and filleting was provided by the fish farmer. Evisceration and filleting were automated to eliminate potential human-induced artifacts. Additionally, the fish farmer provided samples for qualitative analyses of the fillets and histological analyses by the University of Milan, focusing on the health status of the liver and intestine.

Impact & Result

Fish Saved: 244 kg of fish are saved with the use of Ocean Twist feed with 20% inclusion of insect meal. 244 kg fish corresponds to 12.604 fish saved. Feed Efficiency: Compared to the control system, which would have required 28 kg of feed to produce the same amount of fish, Ocean Twist feed reduces feed usage by 19%. This means that less feed is needed for production. Feed Cost Savings: By using 19% less feed to produce the same amount of fish, fish farmers save on feed purchase costs.

Solution Spotlight

Ittinsect has developed and patented a unique biotech process to transform agricultural by-products and insect meals into a sustainable 1:1 protein replacement for fishmeal, the primary protein source used in aquaculture. Their high-performance protein ingredients can be extruded into complete aquaculture feeds or delivered as stand-alone fishmeal replacements to feed manufacturers in the aquaculture and livestock sectors. Ittinsect's mission is to eliminate the need for wild-caught fish in aquaculture and livestock feed, thus preserving the ocean ecosystem. To date, they have protected over 10 million fish, contributing to the restoration of marine habitats and protecting key species like sardines and anchovies (fish to make fishmeal). It is crucial to protect these species to ensure the ocean's food chain.
