Description

Uttarakhand is renowned for its diverse range of indigenous herbs and fruits, which thrive in its pristine natural landscapes. However, despite their nutritional and medicinal value, these resources are often limited to local consumption due to the challenging terrain and the remoteness of villages, which hinder effective market access. This lack of market opportunities has also led to significant migration from the region, posing a major challenge for the state. This case study highlights a strategic intervention aimed at overcoming these barriers through innovative and affordable technology. Traditionally, the abundant Malta-Orange fruit in this region was underutilized, with much of it left unharvested due to the absence of market access. Recognizing its potential, Mr. Nautiyal initiated a project to mobilize local farmers to collect fresh Malta-Orange produce for dehydration.

Impact & Result

Farmers received an average of 15 INR per kg for fresh Malta oranges, while the dehydrated product sold for 380 INR per kg, reflecting a significant increase in value. This venture offered farmers a considerable additional income stream, with each kilo of dried Malta yielding substantial earnings. For a total production of 300 kg of dried Malta, Mr. Nautiyal provided daily wage employment to 2-3 local women, offering them a consistent source of income.

Solution Spotlight

Raheja Solar dryers offer an innovative and cost-effective solution to preserve excess farm produce. Portable and user-friendly, these solar dryers empower farmers to efficiently dehydrate surplus fruits and vegetables while preserving their natural taste, color, fragrance and nutrition without the need for preservatives or chemicals. These dried goods are ideal for health-conscious consumers and have a high demand in FMCG industry. Additionally, the solar dryers are an effective means of impacting the lives of small and marginal farmers by providing them a sustainable source of income.
