A great alternative to the use of mineral acids is CO2, which exhibits none of the drawbacks of sulfuric and chloridric acids. Moreover, the carbon footprint of the solution will be lowered by avoiding the manufacturing of strong acids combined to the sequestration of part of the CO2 as bicarbonate ions.
