Identification

Polybion® is brewing biotextiles from agroindustrial food waste in Guanajuato, one of Mexico's most important industrial corridors. This leather-like biotextile is called Celium®. This lab- grown bacterial cellulose membrane is a unique biomaterial displaying both the performance and sensuality of animal leather while being neither animal nor plastic-based. The leather and cattle industry together slaughter more than 1 billion animals per year and are responsible for more than 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Not only is animal leather a highly polluting material, but it takes 14,000 litres of water to produce 1 kilogram of usable leather. In the context of water scarcity and climate change, Polybion addresses these issues by producing Celium®: a sustainable bio-fabricated leather. Offering many consumer applications, Celium® out of agroindustrial food waste. It can be tanned, dyed, embossed, and formed using the same processes as animal leather, allowing the leather industry to conveniently reduce its impact to the environment.
