Heat is half of the final energy consumption and heat accounts for 40% of the CO2 emissions. Absolicon has created a concentrating solar collector that can produce heat and steam up to 160 C that can heat both industrial processes and district heating networks. Many industrial processes consume large amount of heat. To make one kilo of textiles, two kilos of coal is used, to make one ton of tea, five tons of fire wood is burnt. Using the sun has heat source, this can be changed. The Absolicon T160 has the highest ever measured optical efficiency for a small parabolic trough (less than 2 m). Over 76% of the direct solar radiation is converted to heat. The collector is following the sun within a fraction of a degree. The result is heat and steam up to 160 C that can be used in industries, district heating or solar cooling.

The Environmental Benefits

  • Absolicon can offer heat from the sun at lower cost than from burning fuel. Next to a factory or a city, Absolicon will together with partners build a complete solar thermal field with concentrating solar collectors
  • A 100 m x 300 m field with the T160 solar concentrators will produce 5 ton of steam per hour replacing fossil fuel for the boiler
  • As the solar steam and heat directly replaces the combustion of fuels, CO2 emissions are reduced and air quality is improved
  • In some applications, solar thermal can replace burning firewood from natural forests or plantations. Reducing the extraction of biomass for combustion is helping biodiversity
  • Textile industry is often burning coal to heat the dying processes. To produce one kg of cloth, two kg of coal is burnt. Reducing the need to burn fossil fuel by making the heat and steam with solar concentrators reduces air pollution

The Financial Benefits

  • A solar thermal system can provide energy at Euro 30/MWh to 60/MWh without any CO2 emissions. In many markets, the reduced energy cost will make the industry more competitive
  • Solar thermal gives energy security and a stable energy cost in decades to come
  • The low material content gives 3-6 month energy payback time
