Delivering fresh water for future irrigation systems

Identification

Climate Change reduces water offer locally. Population growth increases water demand, mainly by agriculture which represents about 80% of total demand. International organizations such as FAO, UNESCO, World Bank, … point at the need of sharp increases in irrigated surfaces. These important future irrigation water requirements can be met only by large infrastructure projects. Via Marina takes existing fresh water at any river mouth and transports it coast to coast through a submarine pipeline, delivering it to where it is needed by all users: human, industries and agriculture. Therefore, it is more economical and less energy-consuming. By supplying all water demands, Via Marina helps reducing inequalities between regions rich in water and those suffering from water shortages. The solution also contributes to adapting agriculture to Climate Change and to mitigating it with new forestry specially dedicated to capturing CO2. It also reduces avoidable migratory flows. Indeed, water issues are not only food and development related but also security and peace-related. Excellent impact to cost ratio.

The environmental benefits

•Can provide competitively up to several dozens of cubic meters along two thousand kilometers
•Consumes less than 1kWh/m3 in the longest cases and about 0,4kWh/m3 in most cases, i.e. about 4 to 10 times less than desalination
•4 to 10 times less energy consumption than desalination. No waste.no use of chemicals.
•Potential for developping forestry for CO2 capture
•Helps stopping desertification, recharge of aquifers and reservoirs

•TCO at least 30% smaller than desalination when duly considering negative externalities.
•CAPEX 5 times smaller than traditional onshore transfers.
•TCO derives 70% from CAPEX, so less dependant on impending increases in OPEX
