SOLARBOX is a solar architectural glass structure designed to deliver sustainable energy for existing structures and protected buildings.
The existing building stock represents 99% of a city. Integrating renewable energy sources in existing buildings can pose challenges due to technical and regulatory restrictions. SOLARBOX proposes a new renewable energy solution for existing buildings to address this challenge. SOLARBOX utilises PV technology in laminated glass to produce power from the sun whilst respecting visual regulatory requirements for old buildings. SOLARBOX is highly customisable (e.g. size, colours), making it suitable for protected buildings such as old city centres, castles, and churches to generate clean renewable energy.

SOLARBOX by Sun Soak Design
Implemented by Stephano Immo in Brussels (Belgium) in 2021
Stephano Immo, a real estate agency, commissioned Sun Soak Design to create the SOLARBOX BOTA as a result of a contest won in 2017. They needed an energetical update and an architectural re-qualifying of the old building, lacking visibility in its built context. The project consisted of a non-intrusive intervention as the building was fully rented, using a so-called solar Totem, shaped to be both architectural and optimized for the solar function that covered 850 square meters.
Result
Annual production reaches 115,86 mwh/y & covers 35% of the building energy needs
