Carbon fiber reinforced composites are a class of material playing a key role in energy transition. Their use is rapidely growing in sectors like wind energy, e- and H2-mobility. Their recycling, however, proves difficult and most carbon composite waste is currently landfilled. This is heart breaking considering both the value and the GHS footprint of those fibers. Extracthive has thus developped a composite recycling solution, called the PHYre® technology. A unique combination of solvents enables this process to dissolve the matrix of the composite material and reclaim carbon fibers without altering their physical properties. Our mild reaction conditions result into the production of high-performance recycled carbon fibers, featuring a 10 times lower environmental impact as compared to equivalent virgin carbon fiber. Numerous industrial sectors, such as boating and automotive, are under pressure to lower their carbon footprint, and will benefit from our PHYre low impact products.

The Environmental Benefits

  • The PHYre recycling solution is suited to handle over 90 % of current composite waste, from aeronautics to windmill, from boats to pressure vessels.
  • Carbon fibres reclaimed with the PHYre proces is equivalent to virgin carbon fibres matching over 95 % of the mechanical properties of the later.
  • The PHYre carbon fibre has a 10 times lower GHG footprint compared to virgin fibre
  • Thanks to the PHYre technology Extracthive will double the European composite waste recycling capacity by 2030
  • On average the PHYre technology enables to recycle 70 weight % of the treated waste

The Financial Benefits

  • Our fibre will be commercialised at a price 20% lower than virgin carbon fibre.
  • Pricing policies will be more sustainable for carbon fibre users, particularly in the face of major price fluctuations.
  • Performance equivalent to mainstream alternative and compatibility with our customer's processes
  • Through Voluntary Carbon Credits emission, our customers will saved €40/ton of CO2 avoided. This would represent a potential saving of 10% on the price of our carbon fibre.
