  • Labelled Solution
Label Date September 16, 2020
From Norway
Maturity stage TRL 6 / 7 - Prototype demonstration 1:1

One of the limiting factors to deploy widely solar power plants is the lack of suitable land area. Floating solar is a relatively new technology. Ocean Suns has developed a novel solution to floating solar based on rigid solar modules mounted on hydro-elastic membranes. Designed for minimal use of materials, the solution is efficient at a lower cost. The lean floater design reduces wind drag and the hydro-elastic properties provide excellent seaworthiness. Extensive use of recyclable polymer materials reduces problems with corrosion and fatigue. Consequently, the Ocean Sun solution enables floating solar to a larger geographical area. It is not limited to rivers, lakes and reservoirs, but also nearshore and offshore deployment. The resulting cost of energy is lowered to an unprecedented level

The Environmental Benefits

  • 10% higher efficiency through direct water cooling.
  • CO2 is reduced by about 10% compared to other floating solar solutions

The Financial Benefits

  • Payback time can be in less than two years depending the project

Company Profile

Ocean Sun

Ocean Sun introduces a novel, efficient, cost-effective and durable solution for floating solar energy generation, designed to be installed in any type of water body, including offshore since the system can withstand harsh ocean and weather conditions. This novel patented technology is composed of modified silicon PV solar modules deployed on a special floating membrane structure. The hydro-elastic property of the thin polymer support floating membrane prevents breaking of waves and salt water intrusion, similar to the effect of oil on troubled water.
