Embracing affordable and sustainable transportation mode on public holidays and long weekends.
Who doesn’t love a break from routine when public holidays create the perfect opportunity for a long weekend getaway? Unfortunately, these peak periods see a surge in short-haul flights—chosen for convenience and cost—despite their environmental impact. Domestic flights produce approximately 86% more CO₂ per passenger than trains (1). But what if there were a wiser alternative benefiting both your wallet and the planet? By incentivizing train travel with affordable tickets and government-backed support for subsidizing companies, we can limit pollution and ease air congestion while still making travel accessible and enjoyable. Government support for train travel boosts the economy by creating jobs, stimulating tourism, and reducing fuel dependency. It also cuts pollution, lowers public health costs, and helps achieve climate goals by reducing the national carbon footprint. It’s a win-win-win for travelers, businesses, and the environment. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride as the landscape rolls by.
The environmental impact of flights is significant, especially for short distances where other transportation options, like trains, offer a less harmful way to travel. Short-haul flights emit 151g of CO₂ per kilometer and domestic flights produce 246g, compared to 35g for national rail travel (1). Since all these modes allow us to reach the same destination, it is crucial to choose responsible and sustainable alternatives for short trips. By reducing unnecessary flights, we can significantly reduce emissions and mitigate their considerable environmental impact.
