Improved Cookstove Technology

A programme to support clean cookstoves for healthy livelihoods

Identification

In the world, more than 3 billion people cook with solid fuels on open fires inside their homes and in many cases, without ventilation exposing people to smoke, dust and toxic gases generated by combustion. This indoor pollution explains the significant incidence of acute respiratory and lung diseases in rural families. In response to this, Microsol developed a clean cookstove system with higher thermal performance that directly evacuates the smoke from the house through a chimney. Microsol has worked with this solution for over 12 years through two Programmes of Activities registered under the Gold Standard: Qori Q’oncha (Peru) started in 2008, which is the first improved cookstove Programme registered in the international voluntary carbon market; and Utsil Naj (Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras).
