Description

The world's first CO2 network system to transport energy from groundwater and waste heat to decentralised heat pumps and cooling heat exchangers has been in operation since April 2022. The project received funding from the Swiss Federal Office of Energy. The partners involved in the realisation of the installation, which powers the three buildings of the Engineering School of Eastern Switzerland, are as follows: ExerGo: Company in charge of developing and building the CO2 network HES: Main contact with the SFOE, in charge of project management and responsible for the link between the project installations and the buildings on the Energyolis campus for the purposes of demonstrating the site's heating and cooling supply. EPFL: Responsible for advanced facility management Zéro-C: Company responsible for the design, construction and regulation of the building installations OIKEN: Responsible for the link between the project's installations and the district cooling network.

Impact & Result

The installation produces 1 GWh of heating and cooling per year, contributing to a reduction in CO2 emissions of about 180 tonnes CO2eq per year compared to a gas boiler and air-cooled solutions for heating and cooling. The overall annual COP of the heating and cooling system is approximately 5.5, which allows the heating and cooling needs to be met with minimal electricity consumption. With an electricity price of 200 EUR/MWh, the energy bill for heating and cooling of 3,6 CHF cents per kWh.

Solution Spotlight

ExerGo's CO₂ networks provide sustainable, affordable and efficient heating and cooling services to cities and communities around the world. Using natural resources such as lakes, rivers, oceans, geothermal energy or waste heat, ExerGo's thermal networks efficiently distribute energy using CO₂ in a closed loop. The excellent energy-carrying capabilities of CO₂ allow a thermal network to be deployed in a densely populated area using small flexible pipes. This helps to save high costs and time for construction and piping, enabling utilities, municipalities, private and public companies to accelerate the decarbonization of building heating and cooling in dense urban areas, where a CO₂ network can act as a smart thermal grid, optimizing supply and demand between users all year round. Compatible with standard HVAC systems and heat harvesting technologies, ExerGo networks are suitable for various residential, commercial and industrial applications.
