Whale Seeker to analyze 100,000 aerial images of Arctic marine mammals from Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) using their AI tool, Möbius. This project addresses challenges in traditional manual analysis, which is time-consuming and costly, by leveraging Möbius to process images faster, more accurately, and with standardized results. With DFO’s mission to sustainably manage marine resources, Möbius helps scale monitoring programs, improving decision-making with accessible, high-quality data. The project’s success demonstrates the potential of ethical AI to enhance conservation efforts while reducing time and costs. “Fisheries and Oceans Canada is pleased to partner with Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada and Whale Seeker through the Innovative Solutions Canada program. As the testing department, our scientists worked closely with Whale Seeker to apply their technology to improve the delivery of science advice for Arctic marine mammal stocks.” -- Hon Joyce Murray
Using Möbius, we reduced analysis time by 97%, cutting months of work into days. This efficiency also lowered the cost of analysis by more than 50%, enabling DFO to expand monitoring capabilities while saving time and resources.
Möbius is a proprietary AI-assisted system that complements human expertise to detect, locate and classify marine mammals using remote aerial imagery. Our technology helps maritime industries comply with regulatory or value-driven sustainability goals, empower development projects to minimise the impact on biodiversity, and enable governments to establish evidence-based policy and manage protected areas. We know that technology has the power to help marine mammals and humans not only coexist, but thrive. Our mission is to leverage cutting-edge artificial intelligence to build the tools to make this possible.
