Description

Together with Relianz AG, a Swiss bulk packaging provider, Tide Ocean SA has successfully implemented a cleantech solution using #tide ocean material®. This involves mechanically recycled polypropylene from discarded fruit juice bottles, cups, and plates, which is processed into granulate and used by Relianz AG to make sustainable big bags. This approach converts ocean-bound plastic waste into valuable raw materials, reducing plastic pollution and supporting a circular economy. The initiative reduces reliance on virgin plastics, lowers carbon footprints, and promotes cleaner oceans, serving as a model for sustainable practices in the packaging industry.

Impact & Result

Currently, the big bags contain 30% ocean-bound plastic, marking a significant step in reducing plastic pollution. However, future batches are set to include 50% #tide recyclate, thanks to ongoing advancements by Relianz AG.

Solution Spotlight

The oceans are suffocating, up to 10 million tons of plastic waste end up in the ocean every year. Most of the plastic is coming from land due to a lack of waste management and because the material is often considered worthless. We want to change this perspective and give value to waste in two ways: First, through technology: In collaboration with the Swiss University of Applied Sciences we have developed a mechanical method to bring plastic waste back to life as a valuable material resource, fit to replace virgin plastic in many applications. Second, we create value through social and environmental impact. We offer additional income to local waste pickers and fishermen in Southeast Asia and Mexico to collect the plastic. The plastic gets sorted and cleaned in social enterprises where we create more jobs and offer additional support such as housing, social security, and health insurance. Environmental impact is created through clean-ups and prevention of further pollution.
