story image

Description

In 2022, Stockholm’s only ICA MAXI store within the city limits decided to become self-sufficient in leafy greens, they chose Swegreen’s world-unique in-store farming system. At this time, the agreement between Swegreen and Ica Maxi Lindhagen meant that the store would be the first food retailer within Stockholm’s city limits to offer hyper-locally produced crops, grown from seed to fully mature plants right inside the store. They were the first ICA MAXI to trust us ! Fredrik Rister, store manager at Ica Maxi Lindhagen (2022): “We at Ica Maxi Lindhagen have high ambitions and always strive to stay ahead. Both in offering our customers a range and an experience beyond the ordinary. By investing in our own in-store farming, we show that sustainability is a priority for us,”.

Impact & Result

They reduced CO2 emissions by 93% (from 5 kg to 0.34 kg), cut water usage by 98.7% (from 100 liters to 1.3 liters), and lower energy consumption by 71% (from 12 kWh to 3.45 kWh). This results in substantial savings on energy, water, and operational costs for every kilogram of fresh greens produced. The platform generates a profit margins of 45-60% for both Swegreen and its customers, depending on the platform's size and production capacity.

Solution Spotlight

SweGreen's Farming as a Service (FaaS) platforms, Saga and Freja, designed for sustainable, on-site cultivation of hyperlocal produce. Saga is ideal for smaller grocery stores, hotels, and restaurants, offering three sizes— 6, 10, and 12m²—with a daily production of up to 116 crops, including premium salads and herbs. Compact and efficient, Saga reduces the need for transportation, and operates pesticide-free. Freja, the largest model, is perfect for bigger supermarkets. It boasts a production capacity of 450 crops daily (13,500 monthly) within a 60m² area. Both platforms are designed for year-round, climate-smart farming with minimal resource consumption and a low CO2 footprint. Powered by a cloud-based monitoring and AI-driven control system, SweGreen's FaaS solutions ensure reliable, efficient production. Freja and Saga offer a sustainable, scalable response to the challenges of modern food systems, providing fresh, pesticide-free produce directly to consumers.
