Description

Fava is a dairy farm with 500 milking cows, in the Parmigiano Reggiano Area. The farmers are innovators, among the first in the area to install a milking robot. They adopted SOP STAR COW in mid 2021, to help control some issues their cows were facing, originating from the environment. We monitored their results since then, both from an economic and from an environmental point of view. They achieved great results in terms of improved milk production, in quality and quantity, especially from older animals. The reduction of the emissions, monitored via a special device, together with their efforts, granted them an ESG rating of A+, with certified alignment over 60% to 6 SDGs.

Impact & Result

From an environmental perspective, ammonia levels were reduced by 65%, down to 0.34 ppm, and barn odors decreased. The GHG monitoring device recorded a 50% reduction in methane emissions and a 20% reduction in CO2 levels after applying SOP STAR COW. Economically, the farmer saw a 0.7 kg increase in milk production (+2.3 kg per cow per day for multiparous cows), with improved protein, casein, and a 53.3% reduction in somatic cells, enabling access to higher premiums for their milk.

Solution Spotlight

SOP STAR COW is a complementary feed, that promotes the well-being of dairy cattle, by a contemporary action on the cows digestive, immune and neuroendocrine systems, to improve quality and quantity of milk production. In addition to that, SOP STAR COW improves the condition of the animals bedding, reducing odours and ammonia directly in the barns. SOP STAR COW has also been proven to reduce enteric emissions: methane production is reduced by over 20% and CO2 by over 18% in production animals. SOP STAR COW is a solution to improve the sustainability of dairy production by giving: • economic benefits to the farmers, by improving milk production, in quality and quantity • environmental benefits, by reducing GHG emissions from dairy • social benefits, by reducing odours and ammonia (connected to the formation of fine particulate matter) from farms.
