Charlotte
In 2024, the Municipality of Charlotte, in partnership with Renu Energy Solutions, implemented the SolarLEAF Energy Storage solution to enhance sustainability. The project cost $59,200, with funding from a $20,000 Joules Accelerator grant and a $39,200 city match. Aimed at reducing energy costs, carbon footprint, and enhancing energy resilience, SolarLEAF ensures uninterrupted power for law enforcement. It also alleviates grid pressure during peak hours and sets a precedent for integrating advanced energy solutions in urban areas.
This setup features a 37 kW solar system and a 34 kWh energy storage unit installed at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The energy storage unit will capture surplus renewable energy from the solar panels during the day and release it in the evening, thereby boosting the building's use of off-grid renewable energy.
SolarLEAF is a distributed energy storage solution that directly PV couples to solar panels and installs underneath them. This panel-level format is enabled by an advanced thermal management design which passively ensures that the batteries are maintained at optimal operating conditions. The solution directly addresses the high-cost variability of energy storage installations. These include: permitting, interconnection, customer acquisition, project origination, EPC and other project overheads. In particular, commercial installations in the 50kWh to 1MWh often lack a location to site the energy storage. Yotta addresses this challenge directly. The installation is in-line with the solar installation, requiring very limited additional training for existing solar installers and provides them with a standardized approach for deploying energy storage.
