story image

Description

The Emmi production facility in Langnau installed an industrially operated solar thermal system in collaboration with the Geneva-based company TVP Solar SA. The innovative high-vacuum solar thermal collectors produce some of the high-temperature process water required each day for the production of fondue, raclette and cheese-spread specialities by absorbing sunlight and converting it into heat. The project at Emmi Langnau, which serves as a pilot scheme for Switzerland, was subsidised by the SFOE and supported with funds from the Swiss Climate Foundation. Further support has been provided by the Institute for Solar Technology SPF within the framework of the Pilot and Demonstration Programme run by the SFOE.

Impact & Result

By utilizing this renewable thermal energy, the company achieves substantial environmental and economic benefits. Each year, it saves approximately 21,000 litres of heating oil, significantly lowering its reliance on fossil fuels. Additionally, this shift results in a remarkable reduction of CO2 emissions by 55 tonnes annually, contributing to a cleaner environment and supporting the company’s sustainability goals.

Solution Spotlight

There is a growing demand for renewable sources of energy to replace fossil fuels for industrial processes. TVP's innovative solar thermal panel integrate patented high-vacuum technology to produce the levels of heat required for industrial processes or district heating at the same cost as natural gas and at a lower cost than liquid fossil fuels. The high-vacuum technology allows TVP's flat panels to exhibit minimal thermal losses and no degradation over time, delivering exceptional efficiency. Without the need for cleaning and only minimal maintenance, TVP’s 100% recyclable solar collectors can operate for 25 years to deliver emission free thermal energy.
