Just Eat
London
Working with Just Eat, a leading food delivery platform in the UK and Europe, Notpla implemented its seaweed-based coating technology across their restaurant network, replacing conventional plastic-lined boxes. This marked the first large-scale commercial deployment of a seaweed-based packaging solution in the food delivery sector, driving significant traction in the wider foodservice and catering industry. In 2024, this success led to a partnership with Levy (part of Compass Group) to supply packaging to 50+ notable stadiums across the UK and Ireland. The implementation involves careful collection of seaweed that’s either farmed or hand-harvested when it’s washed up by tides, sourced both locally from Europe, as well as other regions like Southeast Asia, generating positive ocean impact through regenerative farming practices. By 2024, Notpla’s food packaging had been rolled out across 10 European markets in the Just Eat network, replacing millions of plastic-lined containers.
Achieved price parity with bioplastics, targeting a further 20% cost reduction by 2025. Simplified waste management cuts disposal and compliance costs for food distributors and municipalities. In 2024, replaced 3.5 million packaging units—saving 5,919 kg of plastic and 66,391 kg CO₂e. Fully marine-biodegradable within six weeks, leaving no microplastics or harmful residues. Seaweed feedstock improves ocean health, using no freshwater, fertilizers, or arable land.
Improving the packaging used to deliver food to homes is an impactful way for us to help build a more sustainable future for the food delivery sector.
