Konica Minolta
Aarberg
planetary and Japanese imaging technology leader Konica Minolta Inc. joined forces to redefine the economics of fermentation-based biomanufacturing. This collaboration leverages advanced imaging and AI-driven process optimization to achieve significant cost reductions in the production of fermented proteins such as dairy, eggs, and mycoproteins. Key Steps: 1.Integration of imaging technology: Konica Minolta’s image-sensing technology was integrated into planetary’s biomanufacturing workflows. The sensors gave real-time insights into fermentation conditions for precise monitoring of microbial activity. 2.Data-Driven Optimization: AI algorithms analyzed the collected data to improve strain performance, adjust process parameters, and reduce variability. This innovation minimized batch losses and improved yield consistency. 3.Automation and Cost Reduction: Automated controls and continuous feedback loops helped streamline the bioprocesses, cutting operational costs by 20-30%.
The optimized processes have led to a 20-30% reduction in the cost of goods sold (COGS). The reduction in lost production batches minimizes raw material waste and energy consumption. By cutting costs, planetary is bringing biomanufacturing solutions closer to price-parity, which accelerates adoption of sustainable alternatives to conventional systems reliant on fossil fuels and animal-based production.
With recent advancements in biotechnology, up to 60% of commodity products can be sustainably produced, disrupting conventional production in a planet-positive way. Planetary is here to power the bioeconomy by operating a global network of fermentation facilities. Our full-stack fermentation offering and proprietary BioBlocks™ platform enables the sustainable production of foods and materials from biomass fermentation, precision fermentation, and other bio-based production systems while leveraging novel bioprocess technologies, associated A.I., and flexible feedstocks to drive down production costs, minimize environmental impact, and maximize strategic synergies with existing agro-industrial operations.
