story image

Description

Our concept of large territorial units is now illustrated in France through the company SECALIA which was created with the aim of bringing together 155 farmers around a common project combining agriculture and energy production. The Dijon Céréales Cooperative, the regional agricultural center, and Nature Energy have pooled their respective skills to carry out this project with the agricultural world which will allow the valorization of 200,000 tonnes of biomasses and thus enable the production of fertilizer (digestate) and 260 GWh of green gas each year. 36,000 tonnes CO2 equivalent will be avoided each year. SECALIA's production will represent 15% of residential gas consumption on the Côte-d'Or. In the operational phase, 20 direct local jobs and 140 indirect jobs will be necessary to operate the plant. SECALIA is injecting in the gas transport network since August 2024. This is a major tool for territories who want to accelerate the green transition.

Impact & Result

Thanks to this territorial mobilization of the farming sector supported by the local political stakeholders the plant converts 200,000 tons of agriculture biomass each year into 260 GWh/year of green gas. This energy production is similar to the annual gas consumption of 65,000 households (4 MWh/household/year). Last but not least 36.000tons CO2 eq. are saved every year. The farming sector become then a large contributor and facilitator of the green transition.

Solution Spotlight

The solution is developed to increase faster the production of renewable gas with agricultural (Cereals wastes, intermediate crops, livestock effluents) and industrial wastes. This solution is an important element in helping countries to meet the ambitions of ensuring generational renewal, strengthening agricultural and energy sovereignty and accelerating adaptation to climate change. Other advantages can be highlighted such as: additional income for farmers, development of a new agricultural model combining agriculture and energy, which contributes to the attractiveness of the profession and de facto to the renewal of generations, creation of a clean, local and sustainable energy (green gas), and acceleration of methods that are part of the agro-ecological transition thanks to the reuse of organic waste, which is present in large quantities on the territories
