Description

Transport Canada, in collaboration with Whale Seeker, is using AI-powered Möbius to address the critical endangerment of the North Atlantic Right Whale (NARW) by improving monitoring efforts. The AI platform analyses aerial survey imagery of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, detecting NARWs faster and more accurately than manual analysis of aerial images, reducing analysis time from weeks to hours. This enhanced detection provides real-time data to Transport Canada, enabling quicker regulatory responses, such as adaptive speed restrictions and ship route adjustments, while minimising economic disruptions. Möbius’s scalability and adaptability make it a powerful tool for expanding marine conservation efforts, improving regulatory compliance, and setting the stage for broader ecosystem management, including offshore wind and marine protected areas.

Impact & Result

By replacing fuel-intensive aerial surveys with AI-based image analysis, costs were reduced by up to 50%, eliminating the need for full-time onboard observers and maximizing each flight’s utility. This shift enabled regulatory bodies to make faster decisions, minimizing shipping delays and legal risks from non-compliance, while cutting greenhouse gas emissions per operation by 98%. The technology allowed for 100% analysis of collected imagery, improving the chances of detecting and protecting vulnerable marine species in a timely manner.

We are pleased to be working with Whale Seeker again this year to advance Canadian technologies for marine mammal detection that contribute substantially to delivering our surveillance mandate.

Solution Spotlight

Mobius is a proprietary AI-assisted system that complements human expertise in detecting, locating, and classifying marine mammals using remote aerial imagery. Our technology helps maritime industries comply with regulatory or value-driven sustainability goals, empower development projects to minimise the impact on biodiversity, and enable governments to establish evidence-based policy and manage protected areas. We know that technology has the power to help marine mammals and humans not only coexist but thrive. Our mission is to leverage cutting-edge artificial intelligence to build the tools to make this possible.
