Description

To align its restaurants with ambitious sustainability goals, McDonald’s Switzerland began replacing all their conventional flushing urinals with URIMAT waterless models in 2002, when the chain operated around 120 outlets. After a successful pilot in Zurich, the roll-out extended across the entire network. The project included staff training as well as a preventive-maintenance plan. Today, 183 restaurants are equipped with this water-saving solution. The urinals use a patented membrane trap that channels urine into the waste pipe while blocking odours, completely eliminating the need for water. On selected urinals, McDonald’s also displays sustainability messages that engage guests and raise awareness for reduced water consumption. The upgrade tackles two problems at once: wasting potable water and the hidden carbon footprint of treating, pumping and heating that water.

Impact & Result

To date, more than 540 million liters of drinking water have been saved, alongside cost reductions exceeding 1.6 million CHF. These achievements reflect significant progress in both resource conservation and financial efficiency.

Solution Spotlight

The Solution, URIMAT waterless urinals, aims at providing a sustainable, profitable, ecologically and hygienic option to traditional, water-flushed urinals for non-domestic restrooms for small, medium and large facilities. The Solution relies on hightech-palstic or ceramic urinals with an integrated and patented odour-trap (MB-ActiveTrap) which assures that urine is transferred without water to the wasterwater pipe network without any odour nuisance for the user. The rimless urinal bowls with a very smooth and water-repellent surface assures additionally that even smallest trops will be transferred to the wasterwater system and makes cleaning easier compared to water-flushed systems. First class customer service is provided by the manufacturer and their distributors.
