story image

Description

ArcelorMittal, in collaboration with LanzaTech Global Inc., has launched the 'Steelanol' plant in Ghent, Belgium, marking a significant step in sustainability for the steel industry. This €200 million commercial carbon capture and utilization facility leverages LanzaTech's carbon recycling technology to convert industrial waste gases into ethanol, addressing the challenge of carbon emissions from steel manufacturing. The plant reduces ArcelorMittal's carbon footprint and demonstrates scalable, eco-friendly practices, setting a global precedent for advanced carbon capture solutions.

Impact & Result

The facility will diminish ArcelorMittal Ghent’s CO2 eq emissions by 125,000 tonnes annually. Additionally, it will generate 80 million liters of bio-ethanol per year.

Solution Spotlight

To address the global carbon crisis, this solution turns carbon waste into a feedstock for new products with the potential to displace 30% of crude oil use today and reduce global CO2 emissions by 7%. Using bacteria, LanzaTech’s carbon recycling technology converts a variety of input streams from industrial off-gases (refining, steel, ferro alloy), unsorted unrecyclable MSW, biomass wastes and residues. In addition, this solution is also able to convert the ethanol into a drop-in jet fuel, which is significant for a sector that currently has limited options to reduce emissions. By converting pollution into fuels and chemicals, it possible to imagine planes powered by recycled GHG emissions or yoga pants starting their life as pollution from a steel mill. Highly versatile, LanzaTech provides a solution to convert pollution into fuels and chemicals, cleaning our air and keeping crude oil in the ground.
