Ijora Market
Lagos
Ijora Market is one of over 600 markets in Lagos, known for its fresh food and fish. Its proximity to the port makes it a key hub for trade in Nigeria’s largest city. Female fish traders inspired the Ijora project due to significant losses from inadequate refrigeration, losing about 30% of their products daily. In June 2020, KoolBoks launched a pilot programme for these traders and subsequently deployed 300 solar-powered KoolHome refrigerators, reducing their reliance on diesel generators.
The installation of 300 solar-powered KoolHome refrigerators has prevented 120 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions over four years. Additionally, a recent survey revealed that 85% of traders reported increased income as a result of using these refrigerators.
The Koolhome technology is great, as it allows me to store my fish at the marketplace directly. I share the costs for the refrigerator with two colleagues. In this way, we save a lot of money and time. I can now store my fish for a longer time, have less food spoilage, and higher revenues.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, there are over 700 million people who do not have access to electricity and therefore lack access to refrigeration. This leads to food and vaccine wastage. Using the power of the sun and water, Koolboks created an affordable off-grid solution that is able to generate continuous refrigeration for up to 4 days, even in the absence of power and limited sunlight by storing energy in the form of ice, rather than in batteries. This technology brings down the cost of owning an off-grid solar refrigerator by close to 40%. Moreover, PAYGO technology is integrated in the freezers. This made them even more affordable and enables customers to pay in monthly, weekly, or daily instalments. Thanks to Koolboks, now individuals, pharmacies, or healthcare facilities can pay as low as 30$ to own a solar off-grid refrigerator.
