Producing low-cost solar cooling for developing countries

Identification

The lack of cold chains (the sequence of measures needed to get food fresh and chilled from farm to fork) in many countries leads to large-scale loss of produce and quality, with significant impacts on rural and national incomes. Additionally, it makes food expensive in urban areas, which are becoming increasingly populous. 38% of food grown in Egypt and 48% of India's food suffer from this problem. The problem is the need for the food to be chilled on-farm as soon as it is harvested. This is difficult and expensive without mains electricity. Solar Polar's cooling modules don't need mains electricity to operate. The modules can operate both day and night due to a thermal energy storage component, have no moving parts, and provide cooling with zero carbon emissions, thus making enormous improvements to all concerned lives.
