In July 2021, the Bühler Group tested the IoT enabled Modular pallets Solution for an initial pilot trial lasting around 1 year. During the pilot phase, the modular Solution was tested in factory operations, trucking, sea freight, and shipped to different types of end users. The total impact of the Solution on Bühler's global operations was estimated, and different implementation variants were suggested, focusing on a cascade approach with the most advantageous logistics flows first.
To date, the IoT-enabled Modular Pallets Solution has successfully prevented 120 metric tonnes (MT) of wood waste in Bühler's supply chain. This innovative solution not only reduces the environmental impact associated with traditional wooden pallets but also enhances the efficiency and sustainability of the entire logistics process.
Think of Ponera as the “LEGO” of pallets. A smart, modular and digitally-enabled solution, which can be assembled to reach any size. It facilitates circular logistics, guaranteeing full flexibility, and high convenience to the users. Given the right logistic flows, Ponera’s solution can reduce packaging costs and CO2 emissions by an order of magnitude. The introduction of smart modularity will allow providing effective IoT solutions in the whole freight transportation system, increasing transparency, efficiency, and effectiveness of the solution. The use of biopolymers ensures the possibility of reusing the packaging many times in the pallet's duration of life, and its full recyclability. There are three core competencies that Ponera strives to offer: physical packaging innovation, IoT solutions, and process knowledge.
