Kyoto’s first demonstration project is with Aalborg Forsyning in Denmark. This agreement entails Heatcube becoming an integral part of Aalborgs’ initiative to introduce and test clean energy technologies, with a long-term perspective of phasing out coal. Within Norbis Park, Heatcube will replace district heating, which is currently generated using coal, with a renewable electricity-powered district heating system, thereby ensuring a reduction in the carbon footprint. In addition to its role in replacing CO2 emissions, Heatcube will present Aalborg Forsyning with the opportunity to utilize Heatcube within the flexible reserve market. Leveraging its rapid charging reaction time, Heatcube will assume an active role in the flexible reserve market, thereby maximizing the value of its installation for the benefit of the district heating consumers in and around the city of Aalborg.
At Norbis Park, Aalborg Forsyning’s Heatcube replaces >5,000 MWh/year of coal-fired CHP heat, avoiding 1.941 kt CO₂e annually. Charged via reserve market electricity in DK1 with significant premiums, Heatcube is approved as a balancing asset. By optimizing its use in the flexibility market, coal heat is displaced at 40–50% lower cost, delivering both major emissions reductions and economic gains.
Heatcube allows industrial heat to be produced independently from when power is supplied. By allowing for energy to be stored in the salt medium, Heatcube can be charged when electricity is least expensive. This is called load shifting and promotes the use of abundant and affordable renewable energy for clean and stable process heat. Heatcube can be tailored to optimize performance based on the required heat demand by utilizing three core components for charging, storing, and discharging. By combining proven technology with state-of-the-art design, our current Heatcube can provide a constant steam output between 170° C and 400° C. Kyoto’s modular approach allows solutions to be dimensioned to each industrial customer based on charging capacity, storage capacity, and heat generation, while still being a plug-and-play solution.
