Description

In 2019, Migros Genève, GreenGT, LARAG, SIG, and the Nomads Foundation teamed up to launch the GoH! (Generation of Hydrogen) project, aimed at promoting sustainable mobility with a 100% local and renewable hydrogen solution. LARAG developed a 40-ton truck featuring an electric-hydrogen powertrain with an Electric-Hydrogen Propulsion Solution, utilizing a fuel cell for the hybrid drive. The hydrogen, produced by SIG, will be supplied through a Migrol station in Geneva, and the truck will be used by Migros Genève for deliveries. GreenGT's 40-ton electric and hydrogen-powered truck began operations in January 2023 in Geneva, with tests already conducted on local roads for several weeks, covering 1600 kilometers. This hydrogen truck offers the same load capacity as a conventional vehicle and will be employed by Migros Genève to transport goods from the distribution center to various stores within the canton.

Impact & Result

The truck has a 500 hp engine, a 170 kW fuel cell, a 60 kWh battery and six tanks storing 45 kg of hydrogen at 350 bar pressure. With a theoretical range of between 450 and 480 km and a refuelling time of less than 15 minutes, the hydrogen truck emits only water rather than CO2.

Solution Spotlight

While manufacturers are required to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from new trucks by an average of 15% from 2025 onwards, the development and deployment of these new vehicles are very slow. Addressing this challenge, GreenGT aims at accelerating this transition. The hydrogen propulsion system makes it possible to use local energy supply, as hydrogen can be produced on-site. In accordance with eco-regulations, it doesn't generate any sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides or carbon dioxide emissions and reduces engine noise. Combining power, autonomy and fast refuelling time, hydrogen fuel cell trucks are a promising solution to meet the dual challenge of climate change and air pollution.
