Toulouse Métropole
Toulouse
In 2020, Toulouse Métropole partnered with Water Horizon to address wasted heat from the city’s waste incineration plant. Although the plant produces abundant heat, most of it goes unused due to timing and location mismatches. Meanwhile, the Alex Jany Sports Complex, 15 km away, relied on gas and electricity for its heating and cooling needs.
Water Horizon introduced its Move Heat to Cold (MH2C) system: a mobile thermal battery that captures, stores, and transports waste heat without loss. Using salt solutions, the battery stores heat at the incinerator and releases it at the complex as heating (up to 48°C) or cooling (down to -8°C), all off-grid.
Two 1 MW tanks operate in rotation to ensure continuous energy delivery. This system replaces the complex’s gas boilers and electric chillers with a cleaner, more efficient solution - no pipelines required.
By eliminating the need for gas-based heating and electricity-intensive chillers, this community sports facility saves €1,000.- annually on their energy bills. By delivering 1,960 kWh of cooling and 4,760 kWh of heating annually, the system in Toulouse is expected to save 1,300 tonnes of CO2 annually, replacing fossil fuel-based heating with renewable heat.
Water Horizon aims to develop a highly innovative renewable energy solution for industrial heating and cooling applications. Thanks to innovative technology, Water Horizon (WH) is able to recover waste heat from industrial activities and distributes it at another time and in another place to a consumer as renewable heat or cold. WH technology is a mobile thermal battery. It replaces traditional cooling and heating solutions based on fossil fuels consumption, only waste heat is needed as primary energy. Each actor included in our process will get to reduce their carbon footprint and overall costs as this solution allows decentralized distribution of renewable energy at the price of fossil fuels. This process allows the battery to function as a closed loop without consumables which will make this clean energy continuously available all year round. Thus, Water Horizon performs the same functions as traditional heating networks, but without the need for underground networks.
