Description

A U.S. brewery upgraded its outdated air compressor system with Tamturbo’s Touch-Free Compressor Technology, replacing traditional oil-lubricated and inefficient "oil-free" screw compressors. These older systems face issues like oil contamination, high maintenance, and energy loss. Tamturbo’s solution uses centrifugal compression, active magnetic bearings, high-speed motors, and smart controls to eliminate oil use and mechanical wear, resulting in higher efficiency and near-zero maintenance. The new system also recovers heat - up to 90°C - for hot water, adding further energy savings. This upgrade supports the brewery’s CO₂ neutrality goals while cutting waste, electricity use, and maintenance costs.

Impact & Result

The brewery’s upgrade had a total capital cost of $315,000 and achieved full payback in just 10 months. It now saves $378,000/year in electricity and an additional $25,000/year by reusing recovered heat, reducing natural gas use. Tamturbo compressors use 10–20% less electricity than conventional systems and can recover up to 90% of input energy as usable heat. In 44 months, the system has saved 2,337,000 kWh, equivalent to about 902 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions, based on U.S. grid emissions.

Solution Spotlight

The current oil-free technologies to produce compressed air, used by most industrial production facilities have three problems: 1) They are not 100% oil-free, risking end product contamination. 2) They lose efficiency quite rapidly resulting in waste of energy. 3) They need intensive maintenance resulting in significant costs reaching up to 70% of the initial cost of the unit. Addressing these issues, Tamturbo Touch-Free™ Technology combines multiple tested technologies to provide a more efficient compressed air system. The technology is based on centrifugal (turbo) compression, high-speed electric motors, Active Magnetic Bearing technology and an ingenious control system. Altogether, it results in significantly lower electricity consumption, practically maintenance-free use and an extremely reliable and user-friendly compressed air production system.
