The city of Potsdam, in partnership with STEP Stadtentsorgung Potsdam GmbH, is using artificial intelligence (AI) to tackle waste hotspots and improve urban cleanliness. The Cortexia system, installed on five street cleaning vehicles since mid-2023, measures cleanliness with the Clean City Index (CCI) on a scale of 0-5, with 5 being the cleanest. This AI-supported technology analyzes litter levels across the city center, optimizing waste bin placement, capacity, and cleaning schedules. The initiative enhances public services, setting a benchmark for other cities striving for smarter, greener urban waste management systems.
In July-August 2023, Potsdam's overall Clean City Index (CCI) was 4.486, but areas like Bassinplatz (3.532) and Platz der Einheit (3.990) had lower scores due to littering. To address this, larger waste bins were added in late 2023 and early 2024. By July-August 2024, the CCI for these areas improved significantly—Bassinplatz rose to 3.822, and Platz der Einheit to 4.416—while the overall CCI remained nearly the same at 4.447, showing a positive impact on cleanliness.
The solution supports cities in managing their sanitation department, by providing an accurate and real time monitoring of urban cleanliness. A clean city is more attractive and healthy. Less litter will end-up in the environment. Cleaning resources are engaged when and where necessary, based on the cleanliness level to be achieved, savings in energy, water and costs will be accrued.
