City

Borlänge

story image

Description

The municipality has identified Borlänge as a city with excellent accessibility for residents to commute to work using public transport or bicycles. Despite this accessibility, a significant number of individuals continue to opt for cars as their primary mode of transportation. To address this challenge, the Sweden Green Mobility Program brought together 20 startups and SMEs with diverse skill sets and backgrounds, along with established companies such as IKEA and SSAB, and public sector organizations to jointly find innovative solutions that will help reduce the climate impact of commuting. After an intensive eight-week period of collaborative teamwork and expert coaching, four startup teams presented their proposals to Borlänge during a Demo Day. After careful evaluation and consideration, the municipality selected the team “Urban Bike Flow”, composed of CommuteSaver, One4Tech and Pedalink.

Impact & Result

Assuming each cyclist replaced a car commute of 10 km round-trip for 200 workdays per year, this saved approximately 36 metric tons of CO2eq annually (based on average car emissions of 150g CO2/km). For each cyclist, saving on fuel, parking, and vehicle maintenance could result in around €50-€100 per month. If the infrastructure (bike parking, etc.) costs €10,000 to set up, the payback period could be around 2-3 years, depending on savings.

Solution Spotlight

CommuteSaver, a Berkeley Skydeck Alumni – is committed to help companies track and easily report the Scope 3 carbon emissions produced through employee commuting. Our app intelligently pairs commuters using AI, promotes sustainable travel, rewards reduced emissions and aggregates all emissions data that can easily be reported for ESG purposes (per regulation CSRD,SB253 and SB261).
