Description

In-roof solar modules have been integrated into a new roof covering on the baroque congregation house. These small-scale roof tiles resemble the historical structure and fit well into the brick-red roof landscape of Würzburg’s old town, which is protected as an ensemble. In the future, the congregation house can be the inspiration for the monument-friendly conversion of other old towns in Bavaria, which is supported by the Free State with funding.
The nuns were supported by the specialists in energy-conscious construction from the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation (BLfD) and the city of Würzburg. The roof has been finished and the congregation is well prepared for wind and weather. But that’s not all, because what hardly anyone on the ground suspects is that above the sisters’ heads, Bavaria’s first solar power plant has been built on a monument complex that defines the cityscape.

Impact & Result

The roof area of 1,300 square meters is equipped with 16,000 Jacobi Walther Stylist-PV clay roof tiles, seamlessly integrated with Autarq photovoltaic technology. This installation generates an impressive annual energy yield of 110,800 kWh from a 128 kWp PV system, contributing substantially to sustainable energy needs. The system operates securely at an extra-low voltage (SELV) and at very low currents, enhancing both safety and efficiency while maintaining the aesthetic integrity of traditional clay roof tiles.

Solution Spotlight

Autarq solar roof tiles are traditional roof tiles (which have been made for centuries) with integrated solar technology. The product enables you to build or renovate your roof; energy-efficiently. I.e. a roof with multiple surfaces comprising windows, dormers and chimneys will maintain the aesthetic values and look of the building.
