A unique liquid carrier facilitating the transport and storage of hydrogen: easy to handle, non-toxic and safe

HydroSil by HSL Technologies implemented by Port of Amsterdam, Evos, Electriq Global, Hydrogenious in Amsterdam (Netherlands) in 2021

The parties are jointly working on a blueprint for an import, storage, distribution and trading hub, consisting of facilities with a total throughput capacity of 1 million tonnes of hydrogen per year. Moving to overcome the challenges with transporting and storing compressed and cooled hydrogen, the H2 Gate project is exploring several hydrogen carrier technologies in parallel, also to determine potential energetic and operational synergies between them. Subsequent studies into design and realization, including pilots, are conceivable. Pierre-Emmanuel Casanova, CEO and co-founder of HSL Technologies: “H2 GATE is a great opportunity for HSL Technologies. Besides proving all the advantages t

HySiLabs has conceived, developed and patented HydroSil: the first liquid non-organic hydrogen carrier existing in the world. This carrier can transport hydrogen in a liquid state at ambient temperature and pressure by using the existing infrastructures for conventional liquids. Plus, the carrier doesn’t need any energy input for releasing the hydrogen from it. Thanks to HSL Solutions, three main issues of the energy transition can be solved: the safe and stable transportation of hydrogen, the reuse of the soon-to-be-obsolete liquid infrastructures of hydrocarbons and a circular hydrogen value chain with no waste. The first zero-carbon circular hydrogen value chain.

The Environmental Benefits

  • Hydrogen density of the carrier is 8.7%, which is seven times more the hydrogen we can transport via a conventional 200 bars tube trailer
  • During the release process, not only hydrogen will be rejected: 26 kWh per kilogram of hydrogen released are produced thanks to an exothermal hydrolysis
  • HySiLabs' technology has the potential to avoid up to 70Mtons of CO2 emissions in 2030, in the sectors of mobility and industry, if green hydrogen were to replace fossil fuel solutions in those sectors
  • The end of hydrocarbons will leave a tremendous amount of obsolete infrastructures. HSL Solutions will be able to reuse 100% of these infrastructures for the logistics of the solution

The Financial Benefits

  • Despite the fact that the economic impaThe evaluation of the cost of the HySiLabs' solution shows that it is 10 times less expensive than current transportation solution
  • HydroSil’s investment in logistics infrastructure is equal to 0: no need to retrofit the conventional liquid distribution methods to transport the molecule
