Heatcube allows industrial heat to be produced independently from when power is supplied. By allowing for energy to be stored in the salt medium, Heatcube can be charged when electricity is least expensive. This is called load shifting and promotes the use of abundant and affordable renewable energy for clean and stable process heat. Heatcube can be tailored to optimize performance based on the required heat demand by utilizing three core components for charging, storing, and discharging. By combining proven technology with state-of-the-art design, our current Heatcube can provide a constant steam output between 170° C and 400° C. Kyoto’s modular approach allows solutions to be dimensioned to each industrial customer based on charging capacity, storage capacity, and heat generation, while still being a plug-and-play solution.

The Environmental Benefits

  • Heatcube is designed with a steam temperature range from 135°C to 400°C and can generate up to 20MW of discharge capacity.
  • Our first pilot supplies district heating to 275 houses, saving up to 2000 tonnes of CO2 annually.
  • Based on one cycle per day, the round trip efficiency from electricity to steam is minimum 93%.
  • The Norbis Park Heatcube can save up to 2000 tonns of CO2 per year compared to the coal fireed CHP it replaces.
  • The Norrbis Park Heatcube supplies 275 homes in Aalborg with clean heat.

The Financial Benefits

  • For a customer in Spain using 30,000 MWh/year of heat, a standard configuration Heatcube sourcing electricity partly from off-grid Solar PV and partly from the grid would save the customer more than €20/MWh compared to an NG Boiler and almost €40/MWh com
  • The pricing of the Heatcube, under a Heat-as-a-Product agreement, would be roughly €6.6 mill., securing an IRR of almost 10% and a payback time of 10 years while decarbonizing the customer’s heat demand
