Embrace flexible working

Reduce your environmental impact by optimizing workspace utilization and decreasing commuting emissions

Published Date May 13, 2025
Target audiance

Embracing flexible working (through remote work, hybrid schedules, or condensed workweeks) reduces the need for daily commuting, lowers building energy use, and empowers people to work more efficiently. For individuals, it cuts travel-related emissions and costs. For businesses, it reduces overhead and increases employee satisfaction and retention. Full-time remote workers can lower their carbon footprint by up to 54%, while hybrid workers can achieve 11–29% reductions. (5) By adopting flexible work policies, organizations not only reduce their environmental impact but also reduce office costs.

Context

More than 1/3 of desks sit empty all week around the world (1). By optimizing office space and enabling employees to work from home or in shared work environments, businesses can decrease energy consumption for heating, cooling, and lighting. Studies have shown that remote work can enable companies to reduce their office space and energy consumption by up to 40% (2). Additionally, reducing daily commutes can contribute to lower CO₂ emissions by up to 40% (3), making flexible working a sustainable and efficient business practice. Companies that promote flexible working not only achieve environmental benefits but also increase employee satisfaction and operational efficiency. Furthermore, implementing remote work policies can lead to substantial cost savings for companies. Research indicates that businesses can save an average of 5'280$ per employee annually by transitioning to remote work (4). These savings primarily stem from reduced expenses on office space, utilities, and other overhead costs associated with maintaining a physical workplace.
