Ekion is an Australian-based company pioneering the development and commercialization of innovative in situ mining technologies, with a primary focus on Electrokinetic in Situ Recovery (EK-ISR). EK-ISR allows the extraction of metals from the sub-surface without excavation and with minimal environmental impact. The technology relies on electric fields to deliver a chemical solution (lixiviant) through the ore body to liberate and transport one or more targeted metals. These metals are then recovered from the pregnant liquor solutions and processed at the surface. Unlike conventional in situ recovery methods, which are not applicable to most base metal ore deposits due to their low hydraulic permeability, EK-ISR utilizes electric potential gradients to transport ions dissolved in solution through media of extremely low hydraulic permeability and porosity.
