BiON : Biological Methanation

A biological process for energy storage and transport in the natural gas grid

Identification

The expanding installation of wind and solar plants leads inevitably to peaks in electricity generation. As a result, surplus electricity is generated in windy and sunny periods, which to an increasing share cannot be fed into the grid. On the other hand, the deconstruction of conventional power plants causes supply gaps in times of low wind and sun. Therefore the development and installation of innovative long term storage technologies is one of the main challenges in the transformation of the energy system. In order to tackle this challenge, MicrobEnergy has developed its own system of power-to-gas technology. With this process, electricity can be converted into hydrogen by electrolysis. This hydrogen can either be used directly or, in a second step, converted together with carbon dioxide from a biogas or sewage plant into methane gas. Chemically identical to natural gas, methane can be fed into the natural gas grid in unlimited quantities. In this way the existing infrastructure of the natural gas network can be used as a huge energy storage and transport system. BiON contributes to a greener world by converting the energy from wind and sun into renewable gas, thus creating a climate-friendly energy source that can be used universally.

The environmental benefits

  • A 2.5 MW power-to-gas-plant feeds 18'000 MWh renewable gas into the gas grid every year - this saves 4000-5000 t CO2 per year
  • In a 2.5 MW power-to-gas-plant (electrolysis capacity) 115 Nm3 renewable, synthetic methane per hour is produced and stored in the natural gas grid
  • 1.8 million Nm3 sewage gas (65% methane/35% carbon dioxide) are processed annually in a 2.5 MW power-to-gas-plant
  • 100% renewably produced gas, 97% methane product gas quality, 100% storable and reusable in the gas grid
  • 92% reduction of CO2 emission compared to fossil fuel
  • 80% overall efficiency of the process, if all the generated heat is used

The Financial benefits

  • 50% increase in methane production from biogas plants
  • 20 more years of secure income for farms
  • 100% better than fossil energy
