The growing world population is expected to mark an increase of 2.5 billion people by 2050 pushing the demand for food to rise by at least 60%. Providing the growing population with healthy diets from sustainable food systems is a compelling challenge. Agriculture sector will have to double food production to sustain the global population, exploiting fewer resources and causing lower environmental impact. It is proven that Greenhouse farms are able to sustainably intensify the production of fresh vegetables and fruits. They reduce the pressure on water and soil resources but require huge amounts of energy which is currently generated by burning fossil fuels. Solar PoweRed Horticultural Off-grid UniT (SPRHOUT) emerges as the most effective renewable solution to ensure the energy self-sufficiency of greenhouse farms, boosting the transitions towards sustainable food provision. By using solar power and thanks to a thermal energy storage unit, the SPRHOUT provides all the energy input needed by greenhouse farms, i.e., heating, cooling, and electricity.
