DesignPro HydroKinetic Turbines - a small-scale, hydrokinetic turbines that enable users to harness clean, predictable energy from water in rivers

The DesignPro Renewables hydrokinetic turbine harnesses the kinetic energy from flowing water found in rivers and estuaries. The unique concept of this device exploits the natural phenomenon that occurs when flowing water comes into contact with an object or obstruction. By using such an obstacle as part of our design, water is compressed and accelerates as it is diverted out and around the body. The compact design makes it simple and cost-effective to deploy without major civil works with installation times as short as 3 hours for a 25kW system. The device is floating and not permanently fixed so it can be moved easily if required. The platform gives access to the turbines, which can be lifted out of the water for maintenance without having to remove the device.

Key features

  • No head of water is needed to generate adequate power from the ambient flow, even in sites with 1.5 metres per second (mps) means that there is no need for expensive and disruptive civil works
  • A 25kW turbine can displace a 90kW diesel generator that requires 24/7 operation to provide power for 20-30 homes, the turbine would save 4,642 tonnes of CO2
  • Efficiently capture kinetic energy of water flows ( 2M/S), opening up viable deployment opportunities in a greater range of water flows

  • Levelised Cost of Energy of €0.27 per kW making it a sound investment for those currently reliant on diesel generators or those in areas with attractive Feed In Tariffs
  • Power over 60 normal households with combined battery storage with a single 60kw hybrid device or create an array to generate further power
