Green CAES

Cost-effecive solution enabling renewables to power grids 24/7

  • World Alliance Member
  • Featured Solution
  • Labelled Solution
Label Date May 1, 2020
From United Kingdom
Maturity stage TRL 7 - Prototype testing in the real world

All 3 technologies in this solution are simplifications of technologies operating for decades, use standard off-the-shelf equipment (so technical risk is low). 1) Innovative adiabatic TES CAES. Our 500MW, 2.5-21GWh installations have zero/low emissions, 68-70% round trip efficiency, levelled cost cheaper than gas-fired peaking plants and batteries. 2) Equally innovative and uniquely retro-fittable CCGT CAES converts and gives new economic life to gas-fired power stations, reducing emissions, cutting energy costs and adding storage revenues. 3) Hybrids of the two technologies.

The Environmental Benefits

  • Each TES CAES plant reduces emissions by 37,080 tonnes CO2 p.a. (40MW) to 463,500 tonnes (500MW) - CCGT CAES about 1/3 of that and hybrid is between the two.
  • Enables renewables to power grids by providing balancing, back-up, ancillary services and grid stability
  • Makes the energy transition more affordable

The Financial Benefits

  • The payback time is 10-15 years.
