Label Date November 25, 2022
From Denmark
Maturity stage TRL 6 / 7 - Prototype demonstration 1:1

The Wavepiston system harvests the energy in the waves for conversion to power and/or desalinated water (drinking water). Between two anchor points a string is mounted with multiple energy collectors, like pearls on a string. Each energy collector consists of a pump and a plate. When the waves pass by the plates are moved back and forth driving hydraulic pumps that generate high-pressure water, which is piped to a conversion station for conversion to electricity via a standard hydropower turbine and/or used for desalination via a standard reverse osmosis system producing drinking water. A Wavepiston wave energy farm will consist of multiple strings with multiple energy collectors on each string all connected to the conversion station. The Wavepiston system is the solar cell of wave energy - a modular system with identical modules, ensuring high scalability, high automation, and all parts fit into standard 40' containers for easy logistics.

The Environmental Benefits

  • Capacity factor of 25 - 50 %
  • +90 % reduction of CO2 emission replacing fossil fuels
  • A competitive weight per effect in tons per MW
  • A non-intrusive system, not spoiling the view, creating an artifical reef in the sea. Studies so far on wave energy have shown no significant negative impact on flora and fauna.

The Financial Benefits

  • Reference project 7 years payback time
  • Reference project IRR 13%
