A new wave-powered, flexible seawater desalination system for developing countries

Identification
According to UNDP, today more than 1 billion people lack access to clean and safe drinking water and the situation will dramatically worsen in the next 20 years unless clean water supplies increase by about 50% and access is more evenly distributed. To tackle this challenge, Resolute Marine developed Wave2O™. Wave2O™ technology is a proprietary seawater desalination process that couples Resolute Marine’s wave energy converters with onshore desalination and electricity generating plants. While this solution has been designed with simple operation and maintenance in mind, it incorporates several innovative and patented technologies. Resolute Marine’s mission is to significantly improve access to water for coastal populations and industrial/agricultural operations in developing countries and small island developing states (SIDS) and to displace the diesel-electric desalination system that are in common use worldwide. The key technologies that enable Wave2O™ have been validated in a series of tests which have proven to be reliable and cost-effective to produce clean water in multiple places and across multiple uses around the world.

The environmental benefits
- •Employs several wave energy converters (WECs) that pressurize seawater which is piped ashore to directly drive a seawater reverse-osmosis (RO) desalination system
- •Wave2O™ requires no other sources of energy other than ocean waves
- •Due to the low permeate recovery ratio and the relatively small size of Wave2O™ plants, the post-production brine is diluted to a point where it presents no harm to the environment
- •Wave2O™ is powered by an abundant, inexhaustible, consistent and clean renewable energy resource and has been designed so that post-process brine can be discharged directly into the sea without harm
- •Each 4,000 m3/day Wave2O™ plant that replaces an equivalent-size diesel-powered plant will cut CO2 emission by 5,500 tons per year which corresponds to taking 1,050 cars off the road

The Financial benefits
- •The operation and maintenance of Wave2O™ systems and the production of wave energy converters will require skilled local labor and suppliers and will create many local jobs
- •A 4,000 m3/day Wave2OTM plant can produce water at €1.20/m3 which is less than the €3.60/m3 minimum of diesel-electric desalination systems and 3.7x lower than the average cost of water in Cabo Verde
