Identification

Modern monitoring IoT-sensors measuring the waste bin fill-level face multiple problems (e.g. high costs and establishing a stable connectivity to the sensors, resulting in lost data). These creates difficulty for monitoring bin fill-level efficiently in order to transition from static to dynamic collection schedules, hereby calling on new technology to address this challenges.

Static waste bin collection schedules cause major challenges in modern societies, as it results in unnecessary environmental burden and economic loss. Waste management workers spend too much time on manual work on a daily basis, dealing with overflowing bins and citizen complaints. WasteHero provides a complete system for efficient waste management and dynamic collections. The system consists of IoT sensors measuring the fill-level of bins, combined with a user-friendly software system. WasteHero provides you with an easy overview of all your containers and their fill-level, but also consists of a state-of-the-art route-planning system utilizing AI and deep neural networks for optimized dynamic collections of waste. The system provides you with both insights and analytics over your waste stream.

Implementation Stories

WasteHero Solution by WasteHero ApS
Implemented by City of Herning in Herning (Denmark) in 2018

The municipality of Herning in Denmark – collab- orated with WasteHero in 2018 on a pilot project. 125 sensors were installed in various containers across the municipality, with some of them being underground Molok® containers. Later, they ordered the set up of a LoRaWAN® network (a low-power, wide area networking protocol built on top of the long range radio modulation technique), which resulted in 12 installed gateways across the area, and an upscale of the project to 412 sensors in 2019, which was then scaled up to 1,000 sensors throughout 2020.

Result

53% reduction in the number of collections for the bins in question in the 2018 pilot project
