Identification

By providing a matchmaking platform between manufacturing and construction companies, Upcycling Forum is trying to solve the problem of inefficient waste management.

Manufacturing and construction companies produce important amounts of waste - an average of 360 million tonnes in the manufacturing sector and of 900 million tonnes in the construction sector, in the European Union each year. Upcycling Forum aims at connecting these two sectors with design companies, who upcycle the material into products, and design branding companies, who will then sell the product. Upcycling forums allows product developers to become members and to access special offers. Companies can also go directly on the website and see what materials are relevant for their company and buy them directly. There is a possibility for the companies to trade directly with other companies disposing of their waste in order for them to find the best strategic partnership.

Implementation Stories

Upcycling Forum by Upcycling Forum
Implemented by Municipality of Horsens in Horsens (Denmark) in 2020

The municipality of Horsens in Denmark developed a project in partnership with Upcycling Forum, COWI Engineering and Architema Architects to show that it is possible to build with waste. Their new Upcycling Center called “Stablen”, aims to use at least 65% of used and recycled materials, and to educate citizens on upcycling potentials. Since 2020, the municipality has been using the digital platform to map materials, and calculate the CO2 reduction potential of all the sourced materials.

Result

The municipality expects to reach a co2 reduction totalling 130 tons at the end of the project in 2023
