Theam Quant Carbon Offset Plan

An equity investment fund to offset residual co2 emissions

  • World Alliance Member
  • Featured Solution
  • Labelled Solution
Label Date November 8, 2019
From France
Maturity stage TRL 9 / CRI 5-6 - Market competition driving widespread deployment &/"Bankable" grade asset class

This solution aims to open the broad equity market to impact investing, with the ambition to bring high impact, high volume, and high liquidity into on single solution. BNP Paribas's Theam Quant aims to be a leader for the asset management industry and incentivize other companies to replicate this mechanism. BNP Paribas identified and selected a project to support financially (i.e. a community project located in South Western Kenya: Kasigau Corridor REDD+). The purpose of the fund is on the one hand to reduce as much as possible the carbon footprint by selecting ethical companies which have robust energy transition strategy and a lower carbon footprint than the European benchmark, and on the other hand to offset the residual emissions of these companies by buying the carbon credits. BNP Paribas managed to obtain the authorisation to launch the first ever UCITS (Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities Directive 2009) fund to offset its carbon footprint.

The Environmental Benefits

  • Potential CO2 avoided / sequestred by the Kasigau project is equivalent to 1 MtCO2 for the next 30 years
  • At the level of the fund, the equity carbon footprint is reduced by at least 50% compared to benchmark and the remaining is offset, representing around 60t CO2 emissions avoided through the carbon credits for each million invested (as of January 2020)
  • The social and economic impacts triggered by the Kasigau project are on a broad range of applications listed below

The Financial Benefits

  • The cost of the offset for client investing in the solution ranges between 10 and 20 basis point (0.10%)
