Identification

The dry SOLVAir Marine exhaust gas treatment system based on the injection of sodium-based sorbents provides an efficient, sustainable and profitable solution to comply with existing IMO 2020 sulfur regulations. The acid neutralization reaction with the SOx begins as soon as the sodium-based solution is in contact with the exhaust gases after the injection. As a side benefit the system removes more than 99 % of particles and consequently anticipates expected regulations on particle emissions reduction and can thus be considered as a future-proof solution. The sorbents used (also well-known as "baking powder") are environmentally friendly, neither toxic nor irritant or harmful to the environment and human health. They can be easily handled onboard without any risk for the crew or passengers. The resulting reaction products are considered as non-hazardous waste and different options for the treatment on land are available.

Implementation Stories

SOLVAir® Marine by Solvay
Implemented by La Méridionale in Marseille (France) in 2022

the Marseille-based company has adapted a state-of-the-art technology for cleaning the fumes from incinerating household waste on one of its vessels, the Piana. This is a feat in the humid, corrosive and turbulent environment of maritime transport.

Result

Eliminates 99% of sulphur oxides and improves the performance of Teflon particle filters to an unprecedented degree: 99.99% for PM2.5 particles (2.5 microns) and 100% for ultrafine particles (PM1).

03.

The environmental benefits

  • Includes storage silos for sorbent and residues, a dosing and injection system and a particle filter which makes operation and maintenance easy and with a low risk of failure
  • Due to its simplicity the technology can be installed in short time, without longer off-time of the vessel in a shipyard, on top no dry-dock required
  • No transfer of pollutants from air to sea, no acidification of the oceans by release of polluted wash water back to the sea
  • 99 % SOx removal rate
  • 99 % particle removal rate
04.

The Financial benefits

  • 1 - 2 years payback time
  • Several millions of euros fuel cost savings per year per vessel
