Our solution removes atmospheric CO2 and alleviates marine dead zones—low oxygenated water bodies—through the sinking of phytoplankton in near shore marine environments alongside integrated diatom-silica-rich material dispersal.  Phytoplankton are photosynthetic microorganisms that absorb CO2 from the surface ocean and transform it into organic carbon through photosynthesis; when this biomass sinks to the sea floor, it effectively removes CO2 from the atmosphere. On a more fundamental level, deposition of phytoplankton remains in marine sediments is what ultimately generated oil and gas reservoirs. Our solution optimizes this process by using native diatoms that grow heavier-than-water silica 'shells,' causing them to grow fast, sink, and become preserved sediment. This is a key aspect of our marine carbon dioxide removal approach that maximizes speed and efficiency, while also advancing quantification methods for CO2 drawdown and directly assess associated ecosystem benefits.
